Where it came from
The Archon of Cruelty was originally introduced in the Modern Horizons 2 set in 2021, designed as a high-impact, mythic rare creature intended to define the power level of the late-game experience. The design team focused on a 'big mana' pay-off that combined immediate board presence with punishing attrition effects, creating a card that forces opponents to sacrifice permanents and discard cards upon its arrival. It quickly became a staple in various constructed formats, valued for its ability to generate significant value even if removed immediately.
This specific iteration, featuring collector number 371, appeared in the Duskmourn: House of Horror Commander release. The art direction for this version aligns with the horror-centric theme of the expansion, emphasizing the grotesque and otherworldly aesthetic typical of the Archon archetype. By repurposing this powerful design for the Commander expansion, Wizards of the Coast allowed players to integrate a well-regarded modern classic into thematic decks that lean into the darker, macabre visual language of the Duskmourn plane.
