Where it came from
The Argent Sphinx was originally printed in the Scars of Mirrodin expansion in 2010, designed as a centerpiece for decks centered around the metalcraft mechanic. It was specifically crafted to reward players for maintaining a high artifact count on the battlefield, reflecting the mechanical theme of the Phyrexians' corruption of the metallic world of Mirrodin. Its inclusion in Modern Masters 2015 provided a second printing that updated the card for a broader competitive landscape.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk. His depiction captures the surreal, crystalline aesthetic of the Mirrodin plane, emphasizing the Sphinx’s mechanical wings and shimmering, artifact-driven nature. The design sought to balance high-cost power with a defensive flicker ability, a combination that garnered respect among control players who valued the creature's resiliency against targeted removal spells during the Modern format's early years.
