Where it came from
Arguel's Blood Fast originated in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Ixalan, inspired by the plane's Mesoamerican-influenced lore and exploration themes. Designed as a rare enchantment representing a ritualistic sacrifice to the bat god Aclazotz, it features a transform mechanic that allows players to flip the card into the land Temple of Aclazotz once their life total reaches a low threshold, mechanically echoing the desperation and dark reward of the card's thematic premise.
The artwork for this card was created by Bastien L. Deharme, who utilized a moody, stark aesthetic to emphasize the gravity of the blood-letting ritual. Within the competitive landscape, the card is recognized for its unique ability to manage life totals and provide late-game card advantage, leading to its inclusion in the specialized XLN Treasure Chest selection, which curated distinct cards from the Ixalan block for digital play formats.
