Where it came from
Arguel's Blood Fast was originally introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Ixalan, a set heavily inspired by Mesoamerican folklore and exploration themes. This specific card was reprinted in the 2018 From the Vault: Transform collection, a premium box set designed to highlight the game's unique double-faced card mechanic. The collection aimed to showcase iconic transformational cards that had become staples in various competitive and casual formats.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, who utilized a dark, visceral aesthetic to capture the macabre nature of the transformation into the Temple of Aclazotz. The design reflects the game’s narrative focus on the bat-god Aclazotz and the vampiric conquistador factions of the Ixalan plane. Within the community, the card is recognized for its high-risk, high-reward gameplay mechanic, which allows players to trade life points for card advantage until reaching the critical threshold required to flip the card.
