Where it came from
Arguel's Blood Fast was originally released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ixalan, drawing heavy inspiration from Mesoamerican mythology and the aesthetic of classic adventure pulps. Designed as a rare enchantment, it features a double-faced transformation mechanic that allowed players to flip the card into the land Temple of Aclazotz, representing the transition from a vampiric ritual to a sacred, life-draining site.
The card's striking illustration was crafted by artist Daarken, known for a dark, atmospheric style that complements the set's gothic-inspired exploration theme. Upon its release, the card received moderate attention for its unique ability to trade life for card advantage, serving as a staple for control-oriented strategies and earning a place in the Ixalan Promo series as a featured alternate-art collectible for tournament players.
