Where it came from
Arguel's Blood Fast and its transformed side, Temple of Aclazotz, were introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Ixalan. The card reflects the set's thematic focus on mesoamerican-inspired exploration, ancient civilizations, and the influence of vampiric deities. Mechanically, the card was designed to highlight the Black color identity's core philosophy of trading life points for long-term strategic advantages, shifting from an aggressive draw engine to a utility land that stabilizes the player's board state.
The art, created by artist Bastien L. Deharme, leans into the gothic and ritualistic aesthetic prevalent in the Ixalan vampire faction. Deharme focused on a somber, visceral visual language to represent the transformation from a blood-letting vessel to a sanctified ruin. Upon release, the card was recognized for its unique dual-sided mechanics, which reward careful resource management in Commander and other constructed formats, cementing its place as a staple for black-aligned control decks.
