What it does
Menace
Ruinous Ascension — When this creature deals combat damage to a player, sacrifice it. If you do, reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a creature card. Put that card onto the battlefield, then shuffle the rest into your library. If that creature is a Demon, it deals damage equal to its power to each opponent.

Where it came from
The Aspiring Champion card was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant crossover between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, integrating the grimdark aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the mechanical framework of the Commander format. The card depicts a Chaos Space Marine, a recurring archetype within the Warhammer lore, embodying the transformative and often corruptive journey of a warrior dedicated to the Dark Gods.
The artwork for this card draws heavily from the established visual language of the Chaos faction in Warhammer 40,000, emphasizing ornate, twisted armor and the iconography of the Warp. It was designed to function within a deck themed around the Ruinous Powers, capturing the thematic essence of a mortal soldier on the path to becoming a daemon prince. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful addition for thematic deck-building, praised by players for its ability to reflect the volatile nature of Chaos forces in tabletop gameplay.
