Assassin

The Assassin token was released in 2014 as part of the Duel Decks: Jace vs. Vraska set, a preconstructed product designed to showcase the thematic rivalry between the blue-aligned planeswalker Jace Beleren and the Golgari-aligned Vraska. Within the context of the game, this specific token is generated by Vraska the Unseen’s ultimate ability, reinforcing the character's flavor as an assassin who eliminates threats decisively. The dual-deck format was intended to provide players with a balanced, narrative-driven experience out of the box, serving as both an entry point for new players and a thematic collectible for established fans.

The token's illustration was crafted by artist Raoul Vitale, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. The design focuses on a hooded, lethal silhouette that captures the shadowy, high-stakes nature of Vraska’s guild. By choosing a distinct, minimalist aesthetic for this token, the art team ensured it remained visually striking on the table while clearly communicating its purpose as a temporary manifestation of the planeswalker's power. It was received as a functional and flavorful inclusion that bridged the gap between game mechanics and the deep lore of the Ravnica plane.
