Provenance

Where it came from

The Assassin token was released in 2016 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Conspiracy: Take the Crown. This set was designed specifically for the draft-based multiplayer format, focusing on political maneuvering and social dynamics within a game. The token was included to represent the creature types generated by specific cards within the set, such as Marchesa's Decree, which rewards players for maintaining the title of monarch.

The art for this token was created by Greg Staples, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Staples opted for a moody, shadowed aesthetic that captures the clandestine nature of an assassin, emphasizing silhouettes and sharp, lethal details consistent with the set's espionage-themed flavor. It was received by the player community as a visually distinct and thematic utility piece that helped streamline board states during complex multiplayer matches.
