Where it came from
Astor, Bearer of Blades was released in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set Dominaria United. The card represents a key character within the lore of the Dominarian plane, designed to showcase the legendary leadership and mechanical synergy characteristic of the set's focus on tribal and artifact-based strategies. The character serves as a narrative bridge during the Phyrexian invasion storyline, reflecting the desperate efforts of the plane's inhabitants to rally their defenses using ancient technology and armaments.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture Astor in a moment of martial readiness and command. The design aesthetic aligns with the high-fantasy, weathered style of the Dominaria United block, emphasizing a sense of history and the gravity of the conflict. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for Commander players, valued for its ability to provide card selection and equipment cost reduction, solidifying its place as a reliable utility creature within artifact-heavy deck builds.
