Where it came from
Astor, Bearer of Blades was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support equipment and vehicle-themed decks, reflecting the return to the plane of Dominaria, a central location in the game's long-running lore. This specific version, identified as a promo with collector number 194s, features distinct borderless artwork intended to highlight the character's role as a master smith and warrior.
The character design emphasizes the fusion of martial prowess and craftsmanship, consistent with the set's focus on the Phyrexians' invasion of the plane and the mobilization of its diverse peoples. The art direction aimed to create a sense of history and utility, portraying Astor with tools of his trade in a high-fantasy aesthetic. It was received by players as a specialized build-around card, valued primarily by enthusiasts of commander-style play for its ability to reduce the costs of artifacts.
