Where it came from
Astor, Bearer of Blades was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set for Magic: The Gathering. This promotional version, numbered 194p, features a unique art treatment distinctive to the set's promotional offerings. The card was designed to highlight the character's role as a tactician and leader within the lore of Dominaria, emphasizing the plane's history of conflict and the importance of weaponry in its defense.
The character design for Astor was developed by the creative team at Wizards of the Coast to embody the archetype of an expert master-at-arms capable of coordinating complex maneuvers. The artistic rendering focuses on the character's equipment and readiness, reflecting a shift toward more dynamic, narrative-driven illustrations within the game's broader aesthetic evolution during the Dominaria United release. Upon its introduction, it was well-received by players interested in equipment-focused deck archetypes.
