Where it came from
Aura of Dominion was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion, the first set in a block heavily inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, it reflects the block's focus on creature-centric mechanics and the interplay between spirits and mortals. Its inclusion in a blue-aligned set emphasizes the tactical, control-oriented gameplay common to the color during this era of design.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Matt Cavotta, who was a prolific contributor to the game throughout the mid-2000s. In designing this piece, Cavotta aimed to capture the ethereal, mystical essence of the Kamigawa setting, utilizing the vibrant, stylized aesthetic that defined the block's visual identity. While not a centerpiece card in tournament play, it is recognized by collectors as a quintessential example of the world-building and artistic direction that distinguished the Champions of Kamigawa expansion from previous sets.
