Where it came from
Aura of Silence from the 1998 World Championship Decks was released as part of a product line designed to commemorate the top decks from the 1998 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These decks were non-tournament legal reprints of the cards used by the best players at the event, featuring unique gold-bordered backs and facsimile signatures of the players on the front to distinguish them from standard tournament cards.
The card illustration was originally provided by artist Anson Maddocks, whose work is iconic for its role in the early years of the game. Aura of Silence itself functions as a defensive enchantment intended to disrupt opponents by taxing their spells and artifacts. Its inclusion in the 1998 decks highlighted the strategic importance of board control in the competitive white-based control decks that defined the meta-game of that era.
