Mountain

The Mountain card from the Champions of Kamigawa set, released in 2004, serves as a fundamental resource card within the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to anchor the set's unique Japanese-inspired mythology, which focuses on the spiritual conflict between the physical realm of mortals and the spirit world known as the Kami. The visual direction for this land card emphasizes the tranquil, yet rugged, topographies characteristic of the Kamigawa plane, intended to immerse players in a high-fantasy version of Edo-period Japan.

The artwork for this specific iteration was created by veteran illustrator John Avon, who has contributed to the aesthetic identity of the game for decades. Avon is celebrated for his ability to capture light and atmosphere in landscape painting, often utilizing a wide, cinematic scope that makes even basic lands feel like essential components of the game's narrative world. His contribution to the Champions of Kamigawa set was well-received by the player base, as it successfully balanced the functional requirements of a basic land with the evocative, serene beauty that defines the spirit of the Kamigawa expansion.
