Where it came from
The Auroral Procession card is part of the Art Series released alongside the Modern Horizons 3 expansion, specifically curated to showcase the thematic richness of the set. These cards were introduced as a way for Wizards of the Coast to highlight the high-quality digital illustrations commissioned for the game, often featuring pieces that reflect the high-fantasy aesthetic of the multiverse. They are produced as collectible, non-playable cards that favor visual presentation over the standard game-frame layout.
The illustration for Auroral Procession captures a ethereal, shifting landscape consistent with the artistic direction of the set, which emphasizes fluid, magical elements and grand scale. By removing the traditional card borders and text boxes, the design team aimed to provide players and collectors with an unobstructed view of the artist’s work. The series has been received as a popular bridge between tabletop gaming and appreciation for fantasy fine art, often sought out by fans who wish to preserve specific visuals in a larger format.
