Where it came from
Aven Courier was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set in 2022. The card is designed to fit the flavor of the plane of New Capenna, an Art Deco-inspired metropolis influenced by 1920s jazz-age aesthetics, organized crime, and urban verticality. The Aven, a recurring race of bird-folk in Magic: The Gathering, are depicted here as specialized messengers navigating the city's crowded skyscrapers, reflecting the set's central themes of mobility and information exchange.
The artwork was created by illustrator Randy Vargas, who utilized a dynamic, cinematic perspective to capture the Aven in mid-flight amidst the architectural grandeur of the city. The design intent was to emphasize the courier's role within the setting's lore, balancing technical gameplay utility—specifically the ability to store and recover cards—with the thematic necessity of swift, discreet travel in a world defined by industrial noir intrigue.
