Avenging Angel

Released in the 1997 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Tempest, Avenging Angel was designed as a high-impact rare creature during a pivotal era for the game. This set, led by Mike Elliott, focused heavily on combat-oriented mechanics and creature-based strategies, marking a shift away from the combo-heavy dominance of the preceding Mirage block. The card was intended to provide white decks with a formidable flying threat that could persist through combat by returning to the library, representing the theme of resilience and divine intervention characteristic of the color's philosophy at the time.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Matthew D. Wilson, a prominent artist for the game during the late 1990s.
