Where it came from
Awakening Zone was originally released in the 2010 set Rise of the Eldrazi, designed to reflect the overwhelming presence of the interdimensional entities known as the Eldrazi. The card mechanics, which generate colorless Eldrazi Spawn tokens, were crafted to provide players with both board presence and a flexible mana source, embodying the theme of a reality-warping landscape. It has since become a staple in Commander and Cube formats due to its consistent utility.
The version included in the 2016 Planechase Anthology, numbered 56, features the original evocative artwork by Aleksi Briclot. Briclot is known for his atmospheric and otherworldly contributions to the game, and his vision for this piece emphasizes the desolation and alien growth characteristic of the plane of Zendikar under the Eldrazi influence. This specific printing was released as part of a comprehensive collection designed to introduce players to the planar multiplayer format.
