Where it came from
Celestial Ancient was first introduced as part of the Planechase Anthology set released by Wizards of the Coast in 2016. The card was originally designed for the earlier Planechase 2012 expansion to function within the unique multiplayer format that emphasizes planar travel and chaotic, shifting game states. As a creature representing a massive, divinity-infused entity, it was crafted to act as a significant threat on the battlefield, leveraging mechanics that reward players for their existing board presence.
The card was illustrated by artist Allen Williams, who is known for his intricate, surreal, and often ethereal approach to fantasy art. Williams aimed to capture a sense of cosmic scale and ancient power, utilizing a muted palette and flowing, organic shapes to distinguish the creature from typical high-fantasy monstrosities. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid inclusion for multiplayer Commander and Planechase decks, noted by players for its ability to provide consistent mana or combat utility depending on the needs of the board.
