Where it came from
Ayula, Queen Among Bears was originally released as part of the 2019 Modern Horizons expansion for the Magic: The Gathering card game. The set was designed to introduce cards directly into the Modern format, prioritizing intricate mechanical interactions and tribal synergies. Within this release, the card quickly became a centerpiece for 'bear tribal' decks, providing a legendary creature that incentivized players to fill their decks with low-cost, bear-themed creatures.
The art featured on the Modern Horizons Art Series print was crafted by artist Jesper Ejsing. Known for his painterly, expressive style, Ejsing aimed to portray Ayula as a regal and formidable monarch of the forest. The illustration focuses on the duality of her character, blending traditional fantasy creature design with a sense of nobility. Upon its debut, the character was warmly received by the community for its whimsical yet mechanically focused design, cementing its place as a favorite among players who appreciate thematic deck-building.
