Where it came from
Ayula, Queen Among Bears was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Unlike standard expansion sets, Modern Horizons was designed specifically to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format without requiring them to pass through the Standard rotation. The card was created to serve as a tribal leader for the bear creature type, a long-running inside joke and niche fan-favorite archetype within the game's community.
The card features artwork by illustrator Jesper Ejsing, who depicted Ayula as a regal and formidable ursine figure to contrast with the typical portrayal of bears as mindless beasts. The design team sought to give players a concrete reason to build a themed deck around bears, resulting in a mechanic that rewards the player for casting other bear creatures. It was well-received by the player base for its whimsical yet functional design, quickly becoming a staple for casual Commander players looking to build tribal-themed decks.
