Where it came from
Mastermind's Acquisition was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan set for Magic: The Gathering. Within the narrative of the game, the card depicts the influence of the Planeswalker Vraska, who was tasked by Nicol Bolas to retrieve the Immortal Sun. The card's design serves as a functional reference to the 'wish' mechanic, allowing players to pull cards from their sideboard or outside the game, reflecting the themes of search and discovery prevalent in the Ixalan block's pirate-themed treasure hunts.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his vibrant and character-focused style. Voss was tasked with visualizing the feeling of a calculated, ruthless heist, focusing on the moment of seizure. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile utility spell in constructed formats, praised for its flexibility in allowing players to adapt to various game states, while also becoming a staple in casual Commander decks for its ability to access a broad toolbox of answers.
