Provenance

Where it came from

Demonic Tutor was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the very first printing of Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to capture the flavor of black magic within the game's color pie, specifically the concept of searching one's library for forbidden knowledge. Its inclusion in the earliest sets established it as a foundational utility card that would define the power level of the black mana color identity for decades to come.

The iconic artwork was created by Douglas Shuler, one of the original artists commissioned by Wizards of the Coast for the game's launch. Shuler’s depiction of a robed figure summoning a demonic entity perfectly aligned with the dark, high-fantasy aesthetic of early Magic. Upon its release, the card was immediately recognized by players for its immense tactical flexibility, as its ability to retrieve any card from the deck gave players an unprecedented level of strategic control.
