Provenance

Where it came from

The Basalt Monolith first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed as a powerful colorless mana artifact that required a significant upfront cost for a temporary boost. It was created during the game's nascent stage when mechanics were being tested for balance, and it quickly became a staple for its ability to generate high mana output, which eventually led to its inclusion in restricted lists throughout various formats over the decades.

The Summer Magic print run, often referred to as the Edgar set, emerged in 1994 as a corrected replacement for the earlier Revised Edition. Due to a series of misprints and a limited distribution, these cards became some of the rarest items in the game's history. The artwork by Jesper Myrfors, one of the game's original art directors, features a stark, monolithic design that reflects the minimalist and evocative aesthetic common to the earliest years of Magic illustrations.
