The Basalt Monolith was originally released in the 1994 Alpha set, but the specific version known as the Summer Magic (or Edgar) print remains a storied anomaly in trading card history. Produced in 1994 by Wizards of the Coast for a planned second run that was largely destroyed due to extensive printing errors, the few surviving decks were accidentally shipped to distributors. This scarcity transformed the set into one of the most sought-after rarities in the game, representing a fleeting moment where manufacturing mistakes created accidental collector status.

Designed by Dan Frazier, the artwork for the Basalt Monolith captures a stark, elemental aesthetic characteristic of early Magic: The Gathering imagery. Frazier's minimalist approach emphasizes the imposing, structural nature of the monolith, aligning with the card's mechanical function as a potent, colorless mana generator.
