Where it came from
The Battalion Foot Soldier was released in July 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2020. This set was designed to be accessible to newer players while offering mechanical depth, serving as a foundational entry point for the game's annual cycle. As a common-rarity creature, the card was intended to provide a functional, low-cost defensive option for white-aligned decks during the limited play formats that define the core set experience.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often leans into high-fantasy realism. His design for the Battalion Foot Soldier emphasizes the utilitarian, martial aesthetic associated with the soldier creature type. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the community for its straightforward utility and clean mechanical design, typical of the reliable, cost-effective infantry units that have historically populated the white color identity in the game's long-running history.
