Where it came from
Bearer of Silence was released in 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set focused on the conflict between the multiverse-spanning Gatewatch heroes and the Eldrazi, eldritch entities of cosmic horror. As a colorless creature with the devoid keyword, Bearer of Silence was designed to represent the corrupting, alien influence of the Eldrazi as they consumed the plane of Zendikar.
The card was illustrated by Daarken, a frequent contributor to the game who is known for his atmospheric and often unsettling fantasy compositions. In designing the card, the team leaned into the Eldrazi's mechanics of forcing opponents to sacrifice resources, translating this into a powerful flying creature that punishes players for interacting with it. Upon release, it was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency and unique utility in both constructed and limited formats.
