Where it came from
Bearscape was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to shift the game’s mechanical focus toward the graveyard, encouraging players to utilize their discarded cards as a resource rather than viewing them as permanently lost. This card specifically embodies the set's thematic emphasis on the untamed wilderness of the plane of Otaria.
The card was illustrated by artist Heather Hudson, who was a prolific contributor to the game during this era. Her design captures the chaotic, primal nature of a bear-filled landscape, rendered in a style consistent with the illustrative fantasy aesthetic of the early 2000s. While not a centerpiece of professional tournament play, the card remains a notable example of the creature-token generation mechanics that were becoming increasingly common in the game's design evolution.
