Provenance

Where it came from

Bearscape was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed during a period when the game was shifting its mechanical focus toward graveyard interaction, the card reflects the set's thematic preoccupation with death and rebirth. It functions as an enchantment that allows players to exile cards from their graveyard to create 2/2 bear creature tokens, a design choice that incentivized players to fill their own discard piles to fuel an army of creatures.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Heather Hudson, who has been a consistent contributor to the game’s aesthetic since the mid-1990s. Hudson employed her characteristic style to capture the whimsical yet primal nature of the card, depicting bears emerging from a mystical, swirling portal. Upon release, Bearscape became a cult favorite among casual players who enjoyed the novelty of the token generation, even if it did not become a defining staple of high-level competitive tournament play.
