Boomerang first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, quickly becoming a staple of the blue color identity due to its efficient ability to return any permanent to its owner's hand. Its inclusion in the 2005 Ninth Edition core set marked a period of transition for the game, as Wizards of the Coast shifted to a new card frame design that modernized the game's aesthetic. This printing was intended to keep the classic utility of the spell accessible to new players while integrating it into the contemporary visual language of the Core Set era.

The artwork for this specific printing was commissioned from Arnie Swekel, a veteran illustrator known for his dynamic and slightly stylized approach to fantasy art. Swekel focused on capturing the kinetic energy of the spell, depicting a mystical projectile returning to the caster's grasp. While Ninth Edition was designed to provide a stable foundation for standard play, Swekel’s illustration helped maintain the card's iconic status among players who valued its simple, versatile mechanics and its long history within the game's competitive landscape.
