Where it came from
Become the Avalanche was released in 2024 as part of the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander set, which serves as a thematic return to the plane of Tarkir. The card represents a strategic instant spell within the game of Magic: The Gathering, designed to capture the overwhelming, kinetic force of the dragon-worshipping clans during their moments of triumph. It fits into the broader mechanical design philosophy of the set, which emphasizes powerful, high-impact spells that reward players for engaging with the dragon-centric lore of the block.
The art and mechanics were developed by the Wizards of the Coast design team to evoke the visceral experience of a landscape shifting and crashing forward. As a modern addition to the game's expansive library, it was received by the community as a functional tool for decks focused on large-scale combat interactions. The design prioritizes clarity and thematic resonance, ensuring that the visual storytelling remains consistent with the established aesthetic of the Tarkir plane.
