Biorhythm

Biorhythm was originally printed as a rare card in the Scourge expansion in 2003, later seeing a reprint in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005. Designed by the Magic: The Gathering R&D team, the card was intended to capture the flavor of fluctuating life forces, forcing players to reset their life totals based on the number of creatures they control. This mechanic reflects the game’s shift during that era toward high-impact sorcery spells that could drastically alter the state of play in a single turn.

The card features distinct, evocative artwork by the artist Arnie Swekel, who contributed significantly to the aesthetic of the early 2000s sets. His illustration depicts a swirling, energetic motion that visualizes the cyclical nature of the card's namesake. Upon its release, the card became controversial within the player community for its potential to end games abruptly, eventually leading to its restriction or banning in several competitive formats, which has solidified its reputation as one of the more polarizing designs in the game's history.
