Biorhythm was originally printed as a rare card in the Onslaught expansion in 2002, designed to capture a unique, high-impact gameplay mechanic that could instantly equalize player life totals. It reflects a design philosophy from the early 2000s that favored transformative sorceries, capable of shifting the momentum of a game in a single turn. The Ninth Edition printing, released in 2005 as part of the core set, featured the original artwork by Ron Spears, which depicts a stylized, surreal representation of energy flow consistent with the visual language of the era.

Ron Spears, the illustrator, utilized a vivid, illustrative style to evoke the abstract nature of life force and biological timing. Upon its release, the card became notorious in competitive formats for its potential to end games abruptly, eventually leading to its permanent ban in the Commander format. Despite its controversial mechanical impact, the card remains a significant artifact from the game's mid-era history, representing the ambitious design risks taken during the transition between the Onslaught and Mirrodin blocks.
