Biorhythm

Biorhythm was originally printed in the Scourge expansion in 2003, later appearing as a rare in the Ninth Edition core set with the collector number 231. Designed as a high-mana sorcery, the card mechanically reflects the thematic concept of biological cycles, forcing all players to set their life totals to the number of creatures they control. This dramatic swing effect was intended to create high-tension gameplay, though it earned a reputation for being polarizing due to how abruptly it could alter the state of a game.

The card was illustrated by Darrell Riche, who leaned into a surreal, anatomical aesthetic to visualize the biological synchronization implied by the name. In the context of the Ninth Edition set, it served as a legacy reprint that highlighted the game’s transition toward more complex, board-state-dependent power cards. It remains a notable piece for collectors interested in the era of early 2000s Magic: The Gathering card design and the specific visual language employed by its set illustrators.
