Biorhythm

Biorhythm is a reprint featured in the 2022 Secret Lair Countdown Kit, a curated collection of thirty cards designed to be opened one per day leading up to the release of the Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War. This particular version, numbered 58 within the broader scope of Secret Lair releases, serves as a premium showcase of the card’s controversial mechanical legacy, which centers on life total manipulation. Originally printed in the 2002 Scourge expansion, the card is infamous in competitive circles for its ability to drastically equalize player life totals based on the number of creatures they control, a design choice that has led to its banning in the Commander format.

The artwork for this specific reprint was illustrated by PINDURSKI, who reimagined the card’s aesthetic to align with the distinct, avant-garde visual language of the Secret Lair series. The design emphasizes a stylized, high-contrast look that diverges from the high-fantasy illustrations of the original 2002 release. Reception among players was primarily focused on the novelty of the countdown-themed packaging, though the inclusion of such a polarizing card sparked renewed discussions regarding its historical impact on game balance and the long-standing philosophy of the Commander Rules Committee.
