Where it came from
The Bird token, numbered 4 in the Final Fantasy Commander Tokens series, was created as a functional companion piece for the Magic: The Gathering 'Universes Beyond' collaboration with the Final Fantasy franchise. Produced by Wizards of the Coast, these tokens were designed to represent summoned creatures or manifestations triggered by various spell effects within the game, ensuring players could visually track board states during complex tabletop matches.
The visual design of these tokens aligns with the aesthetic sensibilities established by the partnership, utilizing artwork that reflects the iconic, stylized character and creature designs found throughout the long-running video game series. The artwork aims to bridge the gap between the traditional fantasy illustration style of Magic: The Gathering and the high-fantasy, often flamboyant art direction associated with Yoshitaka Amano’s influence on the Final Fantasy brand, meeting with positive reception for its thematic consistency.
