Where it came from
The Bird token was produced by Wizards of the Coast as part of the 2023 Magic: The Gathering 'Tales of Middle-earth' Commander expansion. These tokens were designed to serve as physical representations of creature states summoned during gameplay, specifically for cards that create flying avian creatures, such as Radagast the Brown. The release marked the integration of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium into the Magic multiverse, bridging the gap between traditional fantasy gaming and iconic literary world-building.
The artistic direction for this token follows the established aesthetic of the Middle-earth set, which sought to balance classic high-fantasy tropes with a distinct, illustrated style reminiscent of vintage fantasy book cover art. Illustrators tasked with the token series focused on creating imagery that felt grounded in the ecology of Middle-earth while remaining visually distinct from the game's standard card borders, ensuring that players could easily identify these ancillary game pieces during complex, multi-turn matches.
