Where it came from
Bird Admirer // Wing Shredder was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card utilizes the double-faced mechanic central to the set, representing the transformation of a human inhabitant into a werewolf as the moonlight cycle shifts. It was developed by Wizards of the Coast to lean into the gothic horror themes of the plane, specifically focusing on the symbiotic yet perilous relationship between the local humans and the prowling horrors of the woods.
The artwork was illustrated by Volkan Baga, who captured the transition from a gentle observer of nature to a predatory beast. The design team focused on creating a balanced transformational trigger that rewards players for managing the game's day and night cycle. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players looking for efficient, mid-range creature options that provide utility in draft environments and thematic consistency within the werewolf creature type.
