Provenance

Where it came from

The Bird Illusion token was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 set, a collection of five preconstructed decks tied to the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion. These tokens were produced to support specific mechanics introduced in the set, with this particular creature type being generated by cards that manifest illusory avian copies of the battlefield’s inhabitants.

The artwork for this token was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, whose work is characterized by a high-fantasy aesthetic often seen across Magic: The Gathering sets. In designing the token, Ejsing aimed to capture the ethereal and shimmering quality of an illusion, utilizing a color palette and soft lighting effects that distinguish the creature from standard, physical bird tokens in the game's broader lexicon.
