Provenance

Where it came from

The Bird Soldier token was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Wizards of the Coast, these tokens were designed to represent summoned creatures that persist on the battlefield as a result of specific spells or abilities within the Shards of Alara block. The token reflects the artistic direction of the Naya and Bant shards, characterized by a blend of high-fantasy aesthetics and the distinct creature types featured in that plane's lore.

The illustration for the token was produced by artist Dave Allsop. His design aimed to capture the essence of a militarized avian warrior, utilizing sharp, angular features and a color palette consistent with the set's broader visual identity. As a non-playable card intended only for tracking board states, it was received as a functional utility piece, though it remains a nostalgic touchstone for players who participated in the Alara Reborn draft environment.
