Provenance

Where it came from

The Lizard token, numbered 2 in the Alara Reborn token set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2009 as part of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to function as an external tracking aid for gameplay, specifically serving the mechanics of the card 'Jund Sojourners' and similar cards from the Alara block that create 3/1 Lizard creature tokens.

The illustration was produced by artist Jesper Ejsing, known for his work across many expansions of the game. Ejsing focused on the visceral, feral aesthetic characteristic of the Jund shard, employing a dynamic posture and earthy color palette that emphasize the creature’s predatory nature within the harsh, volcanic environment of its native plane.
