Provenance

Where it came from

The Dragon token, numbered 3 in the Alara Reborn set of Magic: The Gathering, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2009. These tokens were designed to serve as physical representations of game entities summoned by specific cards, such as Broodmate Dragon, which was a marquee card in the final set of the Alara block. The token serves a purely utilitarian function in gameplay, providing a visual shorthand for creatures that exist on the battlefield but are not represented by standard trading cards in a player's deck.

The illustration for this Dragon token was created by artist Jaime Jones. Working within the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Alara setting, Jones crafted a lean, agile dragon design that reflects the vibrant and chaotic nature of the plane. While token cards were often viewed as secondary to the main card set at the time of their release, they have since become standard inclusions in booster packs, prized by players for their role in streamlining complex board states and for the distinct artistic identity they bring to the game's evolving visual lexicon.
