Blackcleave Cliffs was originally introduced in the 2010 Scars of Mirrodin expansion as part of a cycle of allied-color fast lands. These lands were designed to provide aggressive decks with reliable mana early in the game, entering the battlefield untapped if the player controls two or fewer other lands. The cycle proved highly influential in competitive formats like Modern, where efficient resource management is critical to the fast-paced nature of high-level play.

This specific version, numbered 248, was released in the 2023 set Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Artist Yeong-Hao Han provided the illustration for this printing, depicting the treacherous, metallic landscape of the plane of Mirrodin as it was being corrupted by the Phyrexians. The art style maintains the cold, industrial aesthetic central to the plane's lore, emphasizing the stark contrast between the natural geography and the encroaching mechanical blight.
