Where it came from
The Monumental Facade was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Phyrexia: All Will Be One. This set was designed to explore the nightmarish, biomechanical landscape of New Phyrexia, reflecting the faction's goal of completing the multiverse through forced assimilation. The card serves as a utility land that highlights the set’s central mechanical focus on the proliferation of counters.
The visual design was crafted by artist Julian Kok Joon Wen, who leaned into the sterile, imposing architectural style associated with the Phyrexian aesthetic. The illustration aims to evoke a sense of oppressive scale and cold perfection, aligning with the artistic direction of the plane where flesh and machine merge into a singular, unwavering monument.
