Blossoming Sands first appeared in the Fate Reforged expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2015, designed as part of a cycle of common-rarity dual lands intended to support the multicolor gameplay themes of the Khans of Tarkir block. These lands were crafted to provide players with accessible, functional mana fixing during the limited environment of their original release, helping ensure consistency in deck performance without the need for high-value rare cards.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Sam Burley, who captured the tranquil yet vibrant aesthetic of the Abzan Houses on the plane of Tarkir. His design emphasizes the harmony between nature and the rugged architecture characteristic of the faction, using a warm color palette to reflect the synergy between the green and white mana types the card represents. The card was later featured in The List, a curated selection of reprints integrated into modern booster packs to introduce new players to staples from the game's extensive history.
