Blue Ward

Blue Ward was released as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in October 1993. As one of the original five color-aligned protection spells, it was designed to provide a foundational defensive mechanic for blue decks, allowing players to shield their creatures or themselves from red spells and permanents. The card was created during the game's initial development phase as Wizards of the Coast sought to establish a balanced color pie that defined the mechanical identity of each color.

The artwork was provided by Sandra Everingham, who illustrated several cards for the earliest sets of the game. Her work on the piece focused on a clean, symbolic representation of protection, consistent with the minimalist and illustrative aesthetic typical of the Alpha and Beta sets. Upon release, the card became a staple of early casual play, serving as a tactical tool for mitigating the impact of aggressive red damage-based strategies that were prevalent in the game's infancy.
