Provenance

Where it came from

Llanowar Elves debuted as part of the original Limited Edition Alpha and Beta releases of Magic: The Gathering in 1993. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to establish the mechanical identity of green as the color of mana acceleration, providing a low-cost creature that could generate additional resources. This foundational design proved so essential to the game's mechanics that the creature has been reprinted in dozens of sets throughout the game's history.

The iconic artwork for the Beta printing was illustrated by Anson Maddocks. His depiction of the elf, characterized by a distinct, somewhat mysterious fantasy aesthetic, helped define the visual language of early Magic cards. The piece is widely regarded by collectors as a quintessential example of the game's atmospheric, hand-painted origins, reflecting the dark fantasy tone favored by Wizards of the Coast during the early 1990s.
