Provenance

Where it came from

Bog Wraith was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a quintessential example of black-aligned swamp-dwelling creatures. The card was created to serve as an atmospheric, swamp-walking threat, reflecting the game's early focus on terrain-based mechanics and classic gothic horror tropes.

The Ninth Edition version, released in 2005, features artwork by comic book artist and illustrator Ted Naifeh. Known for his distinctive dark and stylized aesthetic, Naifeh opted for a moody, visceral depiction of the creature that leaned into the shadowy, decaying nature of the bog. This reprint was part of a core set designed to provide foundational cards for new and returning players, and the updated art was received as a stylistic bridge between the game's early illustrative roots and its modern era.
