Boomerang

Boomerang was introduced in the Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in 1994. Designed as a blue instant card, it served to return a target permanent to its owner's hand, establishing a fundamental effect that would become a staple of blue control decks throughout the game's history. Its inclusion in the Legends set placed it within the context of the game's early efforts to expand its mechanical depth and introduce more complex interactions.

The card features artwork by Brian Snõddy, who provided a distinct, hand-drawn aesthetic that defined much of the early Magic era's visual identity. Snõddy’s illustration captures the kinetic nature of the spell, depicting the literal object mid-flight to reinforce the card's function of returning an asset to a player. The piece was well-received by early players for its clean, readable design and its consistent role as a versatile utility card in both competitive and casual formats.
