Boomerang first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed as a foundational blue instant that allows players to return any permanent to its owner's hand. It became a staple of early gameplay, prized for its versatility in disrupting an opponent’s board state or reusing one's own powerful enters-the-battlefield effects. The spell represents the fundamental blue-aligned philosophy of control through manipulation and temporary removal.

For the Seventh Edition release in 2001, the card featured new artwork by the acclaimed illustrator Rebecca Guay. Known for her ethereal, painterly style that often deviates from the more rigid fantasy aesthetics of the time, Guay’s depiction of the spell emphasizes the fluid, cyclical nature of the effect. Her interpretation was well-received by the player base for its artistic departure from previous versions, becoming a distinct and collectible iteration within the core set series.
