Provenance

Where it came from

The Boros Signet was originally introduced in the Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion in 2005 as part of a cycle of artifacts representing the ten guilds of the Ravnica plane. These signets were designed to function as essential utility cards in the game, providing mana ramp and color fixing, which solidified their status as staples in Commander and other constructed formats. The Planechase 2012 release featured this specific version of the card, serving as a functional reprint that integrated the signature guild mechanics into the larger, chaotic multiplayer experience of the Planechase format.

The illustration for this card was crafted by Greg Hildebrandt, one of the legendary Brothers Hildebrandt known for their iconic fantasy art and movie poster work. For this design, Hildebrandt leaned into the militant, sun-focused aesthetic of the Boros Legion, emphasizing the guild's heraldry through bold, architectural motifs and metallic textures. The artwork was well-received by the Magic: The Gathering community for its clear reflection of the guild's personality, effectively blending the functional nature of an artifact with the rigid, heroic identity of the Boros forces.
