Where it came from
The Boros Signet was originally introduced in the Ravnica: City of Guilds set in 2005, designed to represent the militaristic Boros Legion of the Ravnica plane. The card serves as a mana-producing artifact that facilitates multi-colored spellcasting by filtering colorless mana into the red and white alignment of the guild. Its mechanical function—providing consistent acceleration while thematicizing the color identity—cemented its place as a staple in Commander deckbuilding.
This specific iteration appeared in the Commander 2017 release, which focused on tribal themes across the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The illustration by Greg Staples maintains the classic aesthetic of the Boros guild, utilizing bold, metallic imagery and the distinctive sunburst symbol of the faction. The card has been widely accepted by the player base as an essential utility piece, praised for its efficiency in maintaining tempo in the slower, social environment of Commander gameplay.
